Coming back in 2018 are our early morning Toast 'n' Jam sessions with local ukulele clubs Wirral Ukulele Fanatics (Sat) and D’ukes of Hazzard (Sun). Blow out the cobwebs at 10am each morning and sing & strum those hangovers away!
Open to EVERYONE! No booking required - just turn up and join in. Spare ukes will be available.
Whether you are brand new to the uke or are a performer who just wants to give their fingers and vocal chords a stretch in the morning these sessions are for you. Start your day with a smile with friendly folk who have made uke playing their passion and just maybe some of it will brush off on you. This is a great way to link up the uke-curious with a ukulele club - it’s a whole new lease of life!
Saturday 8th July 10am you’ll find us hanging with Kev and his Wirral Ukulele Fanatics (WUF) - a Hoylake based group who boast over 100 members! Check them out here: www.wirralukulelefanatics.co.uk and on facebook and catch them on the main stage at 12:30 on Saturday as they open up the Summer Strum with a BANG!!
Sunday 9th July 10am the D’ukes of Hazzard take over the reins. A liverpool-based group who play for beer, pizza and the occasional star of the stage at Ma Egerton’s Pub behind the Empire Theatre. Check them out here: www.dukesofhazzardukulele.wordpress.com and on Facebook. The D'ukes take to the main stage at 4pm Sunday!
Summer Strum 2018 is all about LEARNING new skills and IMPROVING upon current ones. Whether you are a beginner, an amateur strummer or a pro - there is something for everyone in this year's workshops brought to you from Mark Jackson and Jane Jelbart (aka Jack 'n' Jel) all the way from Australia. Let's give them a warm SUMMER STRUM welcome and show our appreciation by signing up to as many workshops as we can over the weekend. All workshops are £10 (discounts available when you sign up to more than one) AND CAN NOW BE BOOKED HERE!
Mark and Jane will also be running a 2 hour introductory workshop at Gallaghers Pub in Birkenhead on Thursday 5th July from 8pm. If you can't just get enough of uking or can't make it to the weekend workshops then sign up HERE!

Mark and Jane are bringing their amazing Ukestration Workshops straight to you at the Summer Strum! In each workshop Mark or Jane will be teaching two of their best ukestrations from the past 8 years and all levels of players, from beginners to advanced, will have a part to play. You will learn a swag of techniques you didn't know you could master and the audience will LOVE YOU!
SATURDAY 11am - Spanish Harlem & Royals
1pm - All About that Bass & Exes & Ohs
SUNDAY 11am - You Can Never Tell & Rhiannon
1pm - All I Want it You & Somebody I Used to Know
You'll then have the chance to perform two of these songs on the MAIN STAGE at the Summer Strum finale as the Summer Strum Ukestra!! Your chance to shine and show off your new skills with your new friends!
FEEL & STEAL WORKSHOPS
ONE. TOO. FREE!
How do those whizzy folk do all that fun stuff? How and when do they improvise? In this series of THREE workshops you will learn and apply the theory and technique of improvising. In the end you’ll be Feeling and Stealing, just like the ukulele alchemists you admire. (Well, ok. Maybe not as good as them, but you gotta start somewhere!):
SATURDAY 11am - Feel & Steal ONE - exploring the pentatonic with My Girl. Must know most chords in Key of C.
1pm - Feel & Steal TOO - playing with Sunshine of my Love & Spanish Harlem. Prior knowledge of scales or Feel & Steal ONE.
SUNDAY 11am - Feel & Steal FREE - time to really rip it up! Best to have attended One or Too workshop and/or have a solid understanding of the pentatonic and improvisation.
SINGING THE STRINGS WORKSHOP
Let your ukulele help you find vocal harmonies. This workshop is all about singing with the ukulele. Jane has been leading choirs for over 20 years and enjoys finding your voice. You will learn how to unleash your singing, get better at finding your harmonies, or even practise some vocal improvisation, depending on your level. All levels of singers are welcome! (including strictly shower and commuting singers)
This year in the true spirit of wellbeing & inclusivity we are joining forces with some great Merseyside organisations to offer the non uke inclined festival goers a chance to relax in our Wellbeing Tent and seek new opportunities to join local (non-ukulele) groups that will enrich your lives - MORE TO FOLLOW ... EXCITED!
